How to see your clipboard history on a Mac

October 17, 2026

If you came here to find where macOS hides its clipboard history: it does not have one. A Mac remembers exactly one thing, the last item you copied. Copy something else and the previous clip is gone.

What macOS actually offers

In Finder, Edit > Show Clipboard opens a small window with the current clipboard contents. That is the whole feature, and it only ever shows the latest item. There is no list, no search, and no way back to the thing you copied five minutes ago.

Why this matters

You copy something, then copy something else, and the first one is gone. Everyone has lost an address, a link or a paragraph this way. The fix is a clipboard manager: a small app that records each copy so you can get any of them back.

What a good clipboard history does

Getting it with Duplia

Install it, give it the one permission it needs (Accessibility, so it can paste into your app), and press ⌥ ⌥ V: tap Option twice, then V. The panel opens with everything you copied, sorted by type, with the source app and a timestamp. Pick with the arrow keys or press 1 to 9 and it pastes straight into the app you were in. You can start with a free 7-day trial, and everything stays on your Mac.

Maccy is a good free alternative if you only need text. See the comparison for the differences.

A note on privacy

A clipboard manager sees everything you copy, so it should keep it local. Duplia stores history in a database on your Mac, uses the network only for the licence check and updates, and never saves content that password managers mark as confidential. More in Your clipboard is none of our business.

Frequently asked

Does a Mac have a clipboard history?

No. macOS keeps only the most recent item on the clipboard. To keep a history you need a clipboard manager.

How do I see what I last copied on a Mac?

In Finder, choose Edit > Show Clipboard. It displays only the latest item. For earlier items you need a clipboard manager.

Can I recover something I copied earlier?

Only if a clipboard manager was running when you copied it. macOS itself does not store previous clips.
